ALPHACRAWLER is a WWW crawling engine for Alpha Tec’s watermarking software packages used for multimedia Copyright Protection & Authentication through digital image watermarking.

ALPHACRAWLER’s single purpose is to crawl in a WWW site, starting from an initial web page, and recursively examine all hyper linked media files from outgoing pages for existing watermarks that have been embedded by one of Alpha Tec’s watermarking engines. The results of this search process are stored in two user-defined text files: one having a list of all the media files examined and one showing only the files that correspond to the embedded watermark. There are options to save files embedded with watermarks in a user defined local directory, search links having a different host than the seed URL given by the user at the start and specify limits on the number of links or files that can be checked. A status bar in the bottom side of the interface is used for displaying user feedback and current status.

ALPHACRAWLER has been programmed in Java. Being programmed in Java means that it can be easily expanded to work with any Operating System that supports Java and also provide advanced functionality, such as the possibility of running multiple clients concurrently.

The program implements the engine of a Web Crawler with a Breadth-First Search strategy but includes methods for examining each linked media file for watermarks. The crawler checks the HTML code of a web page for supported digital media files and valid HTML outlinks and keeps a track of them in log files. Media files are downloaded and checked for watermarks, while the result text files are updated.
